Cormar Celebrates 70 years!

This year, Cormar Carpets proudly celebrates its 70th anniversary, marking seven decades of British manufacturing, family values and commitment to the flooring trade.

A Proud History

Founded in 1956 by Neville Cormack, Cormar began after he invested in two tufted carpet machines at a time when the technology was still in its infancy. Operating from Nunn Hills Mill in Lancashire, the business quickly outgrew its first premises and moved to Brookhouse Mill in 1959, where it remains today.

As demand for tufted carpet grew throughout the 1960s and 70s, Cormar expanded its warehousing and established its own transport fleet, which now exceeds 70 company-owned vehicles. Continued investment in distribution led to the opening of a 130,000 sq ft warehouse in Hemel Hempstead in 2017, strengthening service across the South of England.

Today, Cormar is the UK's largest single independent carpet manufacturer, employing over 400 people across its manufacturing and distribution sites, supported by a nationwide sales team.

Family Values and People

Cormar's success has been built on its family business ethos and the dedication of its employees. Founder Neville Cormack led the business for over 50 years before being joined by his son David in 1987. The company has also benefited from experienced external leadership, including former Managing Director David Judge and current CEO Paul Barratt, who joined in 2024.

The family remains closely involved, with Helen Polito serving as Chairman and Edward Polito joining as Commercial Director in 2023.

Product Evolution

Cormar has continually evolved its product offering to reflect changing consumer demand. From early synthetic ranges through to market-leading wool twists such as Warwick, the company has consistently adapted its portfolio. More recently, successful launches including Sensation and the Primo easy-clean ranges have strengthened its position in the soft carpet market.

Today, Cormar offers a balanced range of wool and man-made carpets for the residential sector.

The company has received more than 50 industry awards, including being named Best Carpet Manufacturer by Interiors Monthly for a 13th consecutive year. Its Silken Serenity range also won Best Bedroom Flooring at the Ideal Home Awards 2026.

Investment and Sustainability

Continuous investment has remained central to Cormar's success, from manufacturing technology and IT systems to its award-winning Trade Portal, now used by around 70% of customers for online ordering.

Alongside its nationwide distribution network and more than 40 Collection Centres, Cormar continues to improve efficiency and customer service.

The business is also committed to sustainability, becoming the first major carpet manufacturer to achieve full Innovate Recycle certification for its polypropylene ranges, confirming them as 100% recyclable.

Looking Ahead

"Celebrating 70 years of Cormar Carpets is a hugely proud moment for everyone within the business. From starting out as a family-run company and evolving into one of the UK's leading carpet manufacturers, we've always stayed committed to the values that defined us - quality, service and reliability. This milestone is a tribute to the dedication of our colleagues, the loyalty of our retail partners and the continued support of customers who have embraced Cormar carpets in their homes."
