After 8 years of planning, dust, and endless cups of builder’s tea, my country home renovation is finally coming together. Nestled among rolling hills and old stone walls, this place has always had a quiet charm - but I wanted to make it truly mine. And one of the last, yet most impactful, touches was choosing the right carpet.
In a home like this, where winter mornings can bite and summer evenings are best enjoyed barefoot, I needed flooring that could carry both comfort and character. Wool was the obvious choice. The loops give it a low, dense feel underfoot, which is ideal for high-traffic areas like the hallway and sitting room. Plus, the texture hides dirt and wear beautifully, something any parent or countryside dweller will appreciate after a long walk through the fields.
I chose the gorgeous, buttery beige shade Oatflake from the Fairisle collection because of its warm, neutral tone and flecks of oatmeal and brown throughout the pile. It blends effortlessly with our exposed oak beams, warm neutral walls and aged brass fittings. The loops add dimension without overpowering the room, a soft pattern that feels both timeless and grounded.
One of the unexpected joys has been how the wool carpet changes the acoustics of the space. Gone is the echo that used to bounce off the walls before the floors were finished. Now, conversations feel more intimate, and the entire house seems to exhale a little more slowly.
To make our home even more cosy, I’ve added baskets full of logs next to the fire & cashmere throws but I’ve found it’s the carpet that ties it all together, quite literally grounding the aesthetic while adding a layer of insulation against chilly country nights.
