Treating Stains on Wool Carpets

When spills occur, it is important they are cleaned up quickly, and using the correct method. We have created the below step-by-step guide to help you tackle any accidental spillages quickly and efficiently to avoid any stains occurring.

     Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

 

  1. Scoop up solids with a knife or spoon.
  2. Blot up liquids by applying pressure with white paper towels or tissue. 
  3. Determine the type of stain remover you need, by clicking on the relevant stain in the list below
  4. Before treating the stain, test the treatments on an inconspicuous part of the carpet for possible colour change. 
  5. With blotting or dabbing motion, work inwards from the edge of the stain to prevent it spreading. 
  6. Do not rub the carpet pile during the stain removal or rinsing stages. 
  7. When attempting to remove stains, ensure that the carpet is dry before proceeding to the next step of the treatment. 
  8. Rinse by applying a small amount of clear tepid water using a clean cloth or sponge. 
  9. Once the stain has been removed, blot up moisture by applying pressure with white paper towels or tissues. 
  10. Do not walk on the carpet until dry.

Bleach

Solution of:

Blood

Apply cold water using a clean cloth.

Dilute 1 part dye stripper to 50 parts cold water and apply using the methods above. Caution: Do not use on dark or patterned carpets.

Burn or Scorch Marks

Dilute 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide (20 volume) to 10 parts cold water and apply using the methods above. Caution: Do not use on dark or patterned carpets.

Butter

Apply dry-cleaning fluid, lighter fuel or mineral turpentine using the methods above. Caution: Ensure that no flame or lighted cigarette is near and use in a well-ventilated area.

Solution of:

Candle Wax

Apply mineral turpentine using the methods above, its effectiveness is increased if mixed with an equal quantity of dry cleaning fluid. Caution: Ensure that no flame or lighted cigarette is near, and use in a well-ventilated area. 

Chewing gum

Apply chewing gum remover (freezing agent) to the affected area using the methods above.

Chocolate

Solution of:

  • one teaspoon of approved wool detergent
  • one teaspoon of white vinegar
  • one litre of warm water
