The Campaign for Wool

In January a presentation was given by HRH Prince of Wales to launch The Campaign for Wool– a major campaign to promote wool. The UK launch held at Wimpole Farm Estate outside Cambridge was attended by over 130 textile stakeholders from the world of wool including merchants, scourers, spinners, weavers, apparel and carpet manufacturers, including David Judge M.D and David Cormack Marketing Director from Cormar Carpets.

The Campaign for Wool is the Prince’s initiative to bring the natural and sustainable aspects together the practical benefits of wool to the attention of textile buyers, retailers and ultimately consumers. Prince Charles gave the keynote speech explaining why he believes wool to be the fibre that can add immense value to both fashion and interiors.


His interest in wool stems from discussions he has had with tenants on his estates who have now told him that the money they are receiving from the wool fleeces often does not cover the costs of shearing the sheep.


“The sad truth is that around the world farmers are leaving sheep production because the price they get for their wool is below the costs of actually shearing it”, he said “The future of the fibre was looking very bleak indeed.”


To combat this drift away from manufacturers using wool and consumers buying carpets and apparel using man made fibres, a Wool Week will be held from the 11th - 17th October to highlight the benefits of wool and HRH Prince of Wales will play a large part along with Nicholas Coleridge, managing director of Conde Nast, the global publishing company behind titles such as Vogue who will spearhead the project.


Cormar Carpets are already one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of wool carpets, manufacturing both wool twist and wool loop carpet at their two mills in Lancashire. Cormar are also already strong promoters of both British Wool and Woolmark Carpets and all of Cormar’s carpets are manufactured in the UK.
