A Cut Above the Rest with Cormar Carpets

Investing in Carpet

Cormar Carpets installs new conveyor link system in their Bury based mill to maximise efficiency within the business and to put themselves first for customer needs.

Lancashire based carpet manufacturer Cormar Carpets has invested over £1million in its cut length system over the past two years to keep the company at the cutting edge of customer needs.

The latest phase has seen a new conveyor link system installed between the warehouse and the cutting tables and the purchase of four new ‘reach’ boom trucks to service the updated system.

"The project provides several benefits for the business and it's customers," said Cormar MD, David Judge. "The new conveyor link from warehouse to cut lengths machines will halve the journey time for carpet rolls going into and out of the department, increasing cutting rate and capacity.

"The reduced boom truck travelling and new reach trucks will cut traffic conflict in both operational and warehouse areas and will result in local environmental benefits and energy savings. Segregating the boom truck traffic from operational areas also has safety benefits for Cormar employees as it reduces the risk of accident or collision."

Other improvements include an upgraded state-of-the-art carpet measuring system, new labelling system and developments in IT. An automated carpet roll wrapping mechanism, currently under development, will also contribute to improving the effectiveness of the cutting process.

This latest phase follows on from the upgrade to the sortation system in July 2008 which maximised Cormar’s ability to cut, load and ship to tight deadlines.

It is this commitment to ongoing investment that has seen Cormar Carpets become one of the UK’s most successful independent carpet producers with some one million people a year buying a Cormar carpet.

The photograph of the new conveyor link system shows carpet rolls coming in from the warehouse, and transported to the cut lengths machine to be cut down to size and then carried back into the warehouse ready for delivery to carpet shops and retailers.
