The Most Popular Interior Design Trends of 2023, According to Social Media

There is a growing community of design-obsessed people on social media, as more and more of us flood to apps like TikTok and Instagram looking for inspiration for our next home makeover. In fact, there are currently over 2.1 billion views on #InteriorDesign on TikTok and over 170 million photos tagged with #InteriorDesign on Instagram!

But what are the most popular interior design trends of 2023 and how much would they cost to replicate in your own home? We crunched the numbers to find out.

What are the most popular interior design styles on TikTok and Instagram?

Taking the top spot as the most popular interior design style of 2023 is cottagecore, with over 12.8 billion views on TikTok and nearly 4.6 million posts on Instagram.

As the name suggests, cottagecore takes inspiration from rural, agricultural life. It’s all about escaping modern stresses and embracing the simpler things. If you want to try and recreate this look at home, try introducing things like reclaimed or vintage furniture, floral prints and lots of soft furnishings. Our new Fairisle and Malabar Two Fold ranges can also be an easy way of introducing a touch of cottagecore to your home.

Maximalism comes in second place, with over 912.5 million views on TikTok and 425,000 posts on Instagram. A naturally bold style, maximalism is all about embracing different colours, patterns and textures - our easy clean carpets are available in a range of bold, vibrant shades.

While it’s easy to assume maximalism is just about “more is more”, when done properly it is just as intentional and curated as any other interior style.

Third place goes to minimalism, with over 737 million views on TikTok and 27.4 million posts on Instagram. Putting the focus on simplicity, minimalist design is usually defined by neutral colours, clean lines and uncluttered spaces.

What are the most popular interior design trends on TikTok and Instagram?

If you’re not planning a complete redesign and instead just want to add some new elements to your home, we’ve looked into some of the most popular interior design trends of 2023. We’ve also provided a rough guide for how much it might cost to recreate these trends at home, on both a low and high budget.

The most popular interior design trend of 2023 is macrame, with over 1.5 billion views on TikTok and 9.8 million posts on Instagram. Originally popular back in the 1970s, macrame has seen a resurgence in recent years, as people try to bring a touch of bohemian style into their homes.

Created using knotting techniques, macrame can be a fun hobby to take up at home, with DIY kits being found for as cheap as £5. Or for those looking for something more elaborate, custom wall-hangings can be a stunning statement-piece to add to your home.

Accent walls were the second most popular design trend, with over 672 million views on TikTok and over 384,000 posts on Instagram. All you need to achieve this look at home is some paint and a brush - from there the possibilities are endless when it comes to colours, patterns and designs!

The third most popular design trend on social media is dried flowers, with over 357 million views on TikTok and over 3.3 million posts on Instagram.

What are the most and least expensive interior design trends to recreate at home?

If you wanted to try and introduce all 30 of the most popular interior design trends to your home, but achieve this on a budget, we calculated this would cost approximately £2,866. On the other hand, if you prefer to go all out and money is no object, you could spend up to £87,305 taking the luxury route!

If you’re sticking to a budget and can only introduce one new element to your home, twisted candles are the most wallet-friendly option, with prices starting from as low as £1. Or, taking a step up from there, macrame, pampas grass, floating shelves and terrazzo all start from around £5 to achieve at home.

At the other end of the scale, if you’re looking for an excuse to splash out, plant walls are the most expensive interior design trend on our list, with high-end options costing anywhere up to £20,000!
