Stylist Notebook: Contemporary Carpets

Carpet has been around for a long time now and like all interior trends the carpet world has seen a variety of looks come and go. It is such a major part of interior design it is not surprising that we’ve seen so many styles through the years. Who doesn’t remember those early carpet designs? From the swirling patterns, clashing colours, made from various newly developed synthetic fibres for the mass market in the 60’s, the bold tartan carpet patterns favoured in the 90’s and who could forget the whimsical, twee, floral patterned ‘designer’ carpets in the early noughties?

Luckily, we’ve come a long way since then and the carpet we now see populating everyday homes takes a more neutral, gentle approach. Softer tones and hues made from premium materials like wool or polypropylene – each has its own benefits. Cormar Carpets have created quality ranges in a variety of styles and colours to create beautiful, versatile carpets for every room in the home and most importantly to suit every budget without compromising on quality.

Here’s our pick of the top contemporary carpets – we’ve chosen our best for colour, luxury, trend and practicality:

1. Colour

This classic, berber carpet from the Natural Berber Twist range is suitable for extra heavy domestic use and comes in a variety of contemporary colours. My favourite colour is Silver Surf. It is a cool silver colour with a ‘fleck’ which creates added texture to the home. This colour suits many interior schemes, especially popular with those who are enjoying introducing stonger tones into their homes. Ideal for hallways, stairs and anywhere in the home where there is heavy traffic!

2. Luxury

Who doesn’t love a deep pile carpet that you can sink your toes into? There is nothing more luxurious than that soft, sinking feeling underfoot when you walk barefoot on a carpet! If that’s what you’re looking for, then my second carpet for a contemporary carpet choice is the fabulous Sensation Heathers range. This superb carpet is a stain resistant, soft pile carpet which can be used throughout the home, making it both practical and extremely comfortable to walk on. It is made from two colours combined which gives it a tonal effect that adds depth and interest to the floor space. Almond Mousse is a really versatile colour that can be used as a solid neutral base colour for any colour scheme.

3. Trend

If you are looking for a really on trend carpet then check out the Wool Loop carpet ranges at Cormar, whether you’re looking to recreate a sisal, seagrass, coir style floorcovering or just something a bit different, you’ll find it here. The Pimlico collection is a particular favourite as it is really versatile; it would suit a country home or an urban setting equally well and offers a palette of striking neutrals. If you’re feeling brave – check out the Pimlico Stripe range, a gently striped carpet which creates impact and is ideal for hallways and stairs.

4. Practicality

Last but not least – for those of you who would like a contemporary carpet in your home but need something practical – fear not…you don’t have to resign yourself to a wipe cleanable flooring. Take a look at the Primo Plus range stain resistant and bleach cleanable – what’s not to love! You can indulge in carpet throughout your home without the worry of spills, splashes and accidents so typical of family home life. My favourite colour is Portland Stone, ideal for lighting up your home space and creating a bright, cleanable flooring solution!
