New DAF Trucks are Made to Measure for Cormar Carpets
With over 100,000 carpet deliveries per year, Cormar Carpets run a highly intensive nationwide delivery operation using specially designed demountable ‘swap’ body trucks for efficiency and flexibility.
Cormar Carpets has just taken delivery of 12 new DAFs under its rolling annual fleet replacement programme. The arrival was timed to meet the increase in demand for carpets leading up to Christmas and those vehicles being replaced will not leave the fleet until January. This planned overlap enables Cormar Carpets to optimise its fleet size in line with the high peak of seasonal demand and to maintain a high level of customer service.
Seven of the trucks are 15 tonne rigid vehicles and the other five are drawbar units operating at 30 tonnes gross weight with trailers. The rigid trucks, the drawbar prime movers, and the trailers are all designed to carry the same six-metre long demountable box, which allows total ‘interchangeability’ between both types of truck and the trailers.
This swap body system adds a high degree of flexibility to the carpet distribution operation allowing fast turnaround at the Lancashire manufacturing site and at the 12 outbase distribution points nationwide.
“Over the last 18 months, because of the difficult trading conditions, retailers are relying on Cormar to provide a fast reliable delivery service – now, even more so than ever”, says Logistics Manager, Craig Marshall. “And this latest investment of over £500,000 in DAF vehicles, coupled with the roll-out of hand held PDA’s to all our drivers over the summer, is helping us maintain high, on-time delivery performance levels to our carpet retailers both in the UK and Ireland. “
With visitor numbers up by over 9% from last year, the Cormar Carpets stand was bustling with retailers keen to view the latest carpet collections.
